Sam Thayer, 13, was riding his blue Diamond Back Edgewood mountain bike south on the edge of southbound Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota about 10 a.m. Thursday May 21st. According to reports, the right front of a SUV struck Samuel’s bicycle and threw him to the pavement. Samuel was airlifted to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg with serious injuries. After the accident, his bicycle was overturned on a strip of grass separating Lockwood Ridge from the sidewalk. Both tires were bent and one had fallen off of the bicycle. A baseball hat and another article of clothing were laying nearby.
The Village Idiots Cycling Club members contributed to offer a reward for information leading to the capture of the hit and run driver. The Florida Highway Patrol apprehended the suspect. Since no reward was necessary, the club arranged with local bike shop Village Bikes to purchase a replacement bike for Sam, along with a new helmet, light, and lock.
This is Sam. Proud owner of a new Cannondale, with his parents, and behind them members of the Club as well as bike shop owner Ed Levins. Happy Trails Sam! We’re so glad we were able to help out. Always wear your helmet and we hope to see you out on a group ride someday!
